Monkeys make exercise more fun!

The Batu Caves are located just outside of KL on one of the many train routes. Let’s hear it for public transport! Woot! They’re also a very religious site for Hindus, there are tons of temples located around them. Kinda makes you feel like you’re intruding on their Sunday service with your camera. Eek. But still it is pretty amazing. To reach the caves you need to climb the 272 steps to the top. How do I know there are 272? Because they’re numbered! Like I need to actually see the number of lunges I’ve subjected myself to.

The best part however is the monkeys! There were loads of them lining the steps to the top, being basically obnoxious. I saw one actually steal food from one of the worshipers! Crazy town. It was hilarious to watch them sliding down the banisters to get to the next level. Just like I’ve always wanted to in every mansion I’ve visited.

I spent some time wandering around the temples inside the caves and then headed back to the huge staircase to start back down. As I approached the stairs you could hear a chant going up. Wondering what the big deal was I asked the guy next to me. He pointed about halfway down to a processional making its way to the top. There were several small girls chanting with their mother carrying bowls their heads. Every few steps they would look behind them to the man who was climbing the stairs on his knees! On his knees people! 272 stone steps on your knees. It’s a type of pilgrimage for the Hindus. It was massively impressive and by the time he reached the top, he had amassed a huge crowd of both locals and tourists. The tourist part of the crowd cheered super loud when he reached the end of the stairs. The locals just looked at us like we were crazy. Of course he would finish. That was the only option to him!

After he made it to the top

Walking back down the stairs was much more complicated. The stairs in Asia are super tiny, like my whole foot doesn’t fit on each stair. So you end up walking duckfooted and slightly sideways to make it down. A little scary considering how clumsy I can be! But luckily I made it down perfectly safe just in time for the rain to start. Time to head back to KL!
