The one and only Lanarch Castle

It really is the only one. Cause there is only one castle in New Zealand and this is it! An odd place for a Scottish castle but super sweet none the less. And to make matters more fun I had an entire tour all to myself. I had been trying to figure out how to get out to the castle using public transport, but sadly no dice. I finally bit the bullet and bought the tour ticket. And when I showed up for the tour bus, I was the only one! It made it much more fun cause the tour part went pretty fast and then I got to wander around by myself.

This is the first photo I snapped before I was politely informed by my tour guide that there were no photographs allowed inside. Booooooooooooo.

But then the tour part was over and I covertly went around snapping more. I kinda felt like Mission Impossible should have been playing in the background as I snuck photos. Here’s a bunch of the inside….

And also the wonderful rounded mirror. Thank you Natalie for recognizing the same painting as me. Made me feel less like an art nerd, as Frank put it.

The weather that day was perfect for a stroll around a Scottish castle even if it made photographing the actual building difficult. I mean really, you couldn’t see further than 30 ft in front of you. There were plenty of times wandering the gardens that I lost track of where the castle actually was. No bueno.

The original builder of the castle had a daughter named Alice and was apparently a HUGE fan of Wonderland. Lots of references around the grounds.

It wasn’t the big grand castle I had been expecting but it was amazing in the weather that day. I thought to catch a glimpse of Hamlet at any moment.
