Steampunk this!

Steampunk: a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.”

Sadly the big exhibit had closed down in Oamaru by the time I got there, but there was still plenty of Steampunk things around town to photograph!

This train is situated in the town square and according to the all-knowing-i-site lady, represents a train escaping from HELL! It’s pretty spiffy at night with all the creepy lights. It was hugely popular with boys of all ages. These are some of the few shots I managed to get without anyone climbing all over it.

Or a giant motorcycle! I’ll ship this one home ASAP for you Drew. It’ll be perfect for Midtown.

The Official Headquarters of Steampunk! Who knew it was in NZ?

Then I proceeded to climb the fence outside to try and get a look into the courtyard and promptly got caught. And then fell off the fence. Oops. I took some shots of a crane thing with a weird cage thing with creepy robot/people inside. I have no idea what it was but it was uber cool.

So there you go Drew, some Steampunk love comin at you from the bottom of the world!
