Rule Britannia!

Australia Day is celebrated on January 26th and commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the resulting British sovereignty over Australia. It’s also known as Survival Day by the aboriginal people. It’s basically¬† Thanksgiving Day for Australians. But it’s a lot of fun! And I made sure I was in a big city for it to get the most out of it.

This is one of the many festivals I stumbled upon throughout the day. It was by the aboriginal people celebrating their heritage. Although on the stage behind this one, there was a DJ playing hiphop. I’m a little unsure how that represented their culture but whatever. It was fun.

There was a big party going down at the skatepark. Not sure why but it was fun. Nice tricks and plenty of people running into each other. Which is always entertaining!

Melbourne has TONS of street artists and performers. This lady was actually painting on the sidewalk. I’m not sure how she got to use paint instead of chalk but props to her. This was a halfway finished Alice in Wonderland.

And a big manly competition was underway in the park. Chopping big blocks of wood. Woot!

I wandered into the Crown Entertainment Complex looking for some food and found this! It’s on the ceiling of the lobby and the colors change in time with the music that plays throughout the area.

Love my camera!

Finally it was time for the big show of fireworks in Federation Square. I hooked up with a few people from my hostel and headed down to catch them. We turned up just in time and they were pretty spectacular. Totally made up for the NYE fireworks in Christchurch.

They were setting off fireworks from two different spots, one of which was on top of this building. After they finished it looked like it was on fire. Which was cool and kindof disturbing since it looks like one of the Twin Towers. Oh well.

Woo fireworks! Afterwards we took out beers and sat along the river enjoying the rest of the night. It reminded me alot of Fourth of July, all that was missing was a big BBQ.
